Lookout Mtn update - 9/21/19

Thanks to the efforts of Kenny Richards, Scott Honaker, Erik Robins, and Steve Magnuson today we were able to finally complete the installation at Lookout up in Whatcom County. Today Sectors 1 and 2 were put online along with finalizing the lightning arrestors for all 2 sectors and PTP dishes. This brings HamWAN to a majority of the 4 NW Counties in Washington, as well as a significant part of the lower B.C. mainland. I will work to get the website map updated in the coming week to give a better indication of overall coverage areas. As with all HamWAN projects this would not have happened without the help of a LOT of people - both direct and indirect. HamWAN's presence at the Lookout site would not have happened without the support of Rob Chatham. We may have some minor follow-up with improving the aim of the Triangle/McDonald dish and possibly adjusting down-tilt on Sector 1 if it is needed for covering close-in users to the site, but we are likely done at Lookout for this season. If you live in coverage areas in Skagit, Whatcom, Island, or San Juan counties, you are welcome to setup gear and make use of the network. Please contact myself or anyone else on NetOps if you have questions or problems. Thanks again to everyone involved. We have a couple more smaller site projects we're hoping to finish before the weather puts a stop to our activities for the season, but this likely is the last "big" project for this year. For the most part things seem to be going good. I got 4 LEDs lit up before I proceeded with Client Set up. Encryption issues

Hi Gang, I'm in the process of re-building my Winlink Gateway, with the intent to move it to the local fire station hose tower (a much better location). I am planning to use the data ring for access to the Winlink system, and the site does have coverage from Tiger. I have two problems, I think.... First, I think that "RMS Packet", the server application, has switched to an SSL connection to the Winlink CMS system. I believe they do still support the non-SSL port, so I think I can force that using the hosts file. The bigger problem is that this will be running on a Win10 host to support the Vara FM protocol, which is currently Windows only. Win10 tends to be rather "chatty", and I suspect (though I have not confirmed) that most of it's background noise is SSL/TLS. Has anyone looked at this, and can Win10 be made to "shutup"? I suppose I could run LinBPQ on a RasPi as the main gateway, and just use the Win10 box as a modem on an isolated segment, but that seems like a lot of work. Thoughts? -- *-Scott*

Dish alignment continued

I have the MikroTik mANT30 dish antenna and the BaseBox5. I didn't notice an LED's on the base box but then again I wasn't looking. Can I just plug the POE into my length of CAT7 sans computer and do rough/LED alignment like that?

I took advantage of the rain free days and mounted my dish this weekend. I've roughly aligned by sight and level. I have a new dedicated computer on order which should arrive this week. Router selection

The radio is scheduled for delivery today, I'm very curious to see if I actually get a ROW version. The conversations with StreakWave were confusing. As I'm visualizing the hardware chain I'm just realizing probably need a different router that my Netgear C7100V I use for Comcast cable/voice. Are there any specific recommendations? Should I consider a balancing one? I only vaguely understand what that is but it sounds like I could bring in both HamWan and cable feeds to one. Thanks in advance! -Ric K7iTE Mount Vernon WA
