HamWAN at Redmond Derby Days!!

The City of Redmond ARES group has an exhibition table at the Redmond Derby Days event. We have a HamWAN link from the exhibition area by City Hall via 900 MHz to a 5 GHz relay to E. Tiger. We're presently getting about 6.5 Mbps down and 4.7 Mbps up. So, if any of you will be in the neighborhood, stop by and say Hi!

The biggest limiting factor is line of sight. Anything solid will block the signal, so for the most part HamWAN only works when you can see the tower/mountain it's on. The coverage map here: https://hamwan.org/t/Coverage+Map shows areas in red that are calculated to have line-of-sight to a HamWAN site from an antenna located 30 ft above ground (typical 2-story building plus mast height). Zoom in on Lake City to see what you might get. I can help you with more detailed analysis if it looks promising. Once you have line of sight, range is 100 km or so. I do not have Ham license, but I am interested in the HamWAN project. I used to work for a wireless ISP and we did essentially what you are doing with unlicensed spectrum. I might be able to help on Saturday. I will likely get my Ham cert so I can play with you guys. Volunteers for Capitol Peak on May 28th? (Saturday)

Hi all, We got 1 new sector installed this past weekend @ Capitol Peak. It's Sector 2 facing 120 degrees which covers Olympia and Chehalis. The home page network map is not yet updated to reflect this new coverage zone. High winds, cold and rain prevented the installation of any further equipment. We have 1 dish and 1 sector left to install at the site. If you'd like to volunteer this upcoming Saturday, please reply to me directly (not the list). Ideally I'd like to have another climber so we can finish the site quickly on Saturday (and for safety / immediate rescue reasons), and I need to have a person capable of operating the network to give signal readings for dish alignment. If you think you can operate routers, please get in touch with me and we can add you to the network operator pool. The network person doesn't necessarily need to be on site, but does need to be on the radio. Thanks, --Bart

Triangle sectors are on the air

Hello, Just wanted to let everyone know the Victoria crew recently installed the sector antennas @ the Triangle site (Victoria, BC). We have updated our main coverage map to reflect their radiation patterns. These aren't optimally aligned, but at least they should provide service to Port Angeles and San Juan Island. We'll update the map if anything changes with the sector angles. In the meantime, do we know any Port Angeles or San Juan hams that could give this new part of the network a try? --Bart

Evergreen Hospital / Monroe

Greetings all, Today I performed a re-test of connectivity at Evergreen Hospital in Monroe. Last year we were able to connect around/through trees west to SnoDEM @ Paine Field. Today's connection was a wide-open shot straight to Haystack. Back then Valley General Hospital was going through merger & acquisition growing pains and there wasn't much interest in HamWAN at that particular time. Last month after reaching out things have moved along very well and we appear to have very good support. An antenna location has been identified and they will be installing CAT5 from the roof to radio room in the next 2-3 weeks. This should give us time to have the pieces in place to connect Evergreen to SnoDEM and Providence for the upcoming Cascadia Rising drill in June. I hope to still add Everett Clinic this month as well. This will give us a long-overdue, good working core of EM-types to expand off of following the drill. Each installation will have a local EOC hotspot, VOIP phone, and laptop or desktop PC for web/email access. Thanks to Nigel, Bart, Tom, Ryan, Cory and the rest of the folks who have helped with VOIP, information, and other guidance to help make it happen. More as it develops. Cheers, Rob
