Hello, The recent Haystack work party managed to install a receive-only SDR up there. It is provisionally available for use by anyone at: http://44.24.241.60:8073 I'll move it to a more permanent address, with proper DNS, at some future point. In the meantime, I'd like to solicit advice on how to minimize the QRM it's picking up. The noise is being emitted by the site itself, from the Ethernet cables and such. I've connected all the shields to site ground, but the emissions are still there. The current antenna is a ground rod with vertical whip. 1) Is there a better antenna design that can serve the broadband (DC-30MHz) omnidirectional receive duties? 2) Are there any suggestions on how to further minimize the noise being emitted by the site? Thanks, and enjoy! --Bart
What kind of whip? If it's just a ground rod, adding radials should help. On Wed, Jul 11, 2018 at 12:44 PM Bart Kus <me@bartk.us> wrote:

I'm curious about the antenna, as well. I can send myself CW at 100mw (the lowest power my radio will go) from my QTH (near Snohomish) using a G5RV with a peak about 30ft, and receive it on the SDR anywhere from 559 to 599, depending on the band. Granted, that's only maybe 20 miles, but still rather impressive for 100mw and what sounds like a very compromised antenna on the Haystack end. You guys planning on adding this to sdr.hu? Just for giggles, I dug a step attenuator out of the closet, and I can still hear code clearly enough at 10mw to copy on 10m. I can actually still hear it with 15db attenuation (ie, 3mw out), but not clearly enough to copy. 20db (1mw) is inaudible. Yeah, I know, nothing to do with HamWAN directly, but since there's a new toy to play with and all... Jeff/N0GQ On Wed, Jul 11, 2018 at 3:43 PM, Jeff Francis™ <jeff@gritch.org> wrote:

Glad to hear it's amusing someone. :) I recently spent some time setting up a DRM <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Radio_Mondiale> decoder with that Kiwi. Basically Kiwi SDR in IQ mode -> VB-Cable <https://www.vb-audio.com/Cable/> -> Dream <https://sourceforge.net/projects/drm/> in "I/Q Pos Split" mode, with the missing AAC+ DDL here <http://www.travelradio.lv/drm/drm_new_software/dream/dream1.14/dream_1.14.zip>. Ended up recording <http://www.hamwan.org/DreamOut.mp3> some 250kW broadcast all the way from Kuwait. Not the most thrilling of content, but still neat to hear Hi-Fi stereo on HF. The antenna is a large (7ft?) CB whip. Not base loaded, just attached to the center conductor of the coax, with the shield attached to the ground rod. Perhaps some of the folks who installed it took pictures. --Bart On 7/11/2018 3:54 PM, Jeff Francis™ wrote:

Oh, it was hacked, I think via one of the hacked modems. Modems are patched now, and I re-flashed it. However in the meantime, it grabbed a new DHCP lease @ 44.24.241.55. We should really give it a static IP/lease + DNS entry so it stops moving around... --Bart On 9/18/2018 8:24 PM, Jeff Francis™ wrote:

While I'm sure you'll want to add it to hamwan.org, I added it to one of my domains as sdr.n0gq.org as a stopgap. Because age. Jeff/N0GQ On Tue, Sep 18, 2018 at 8:28 PM Bart Kus <me@bartk.us> wrote:
