I saw this blurb online. I haven't read the details yet. Think this will affect the frequencies we can get from MikroTik routers in the future? I'd hate to have future routers "Locked" so we can't get our current frequencies. Possibly higher noise floor down the road too. Ken K7ICY Quote from Wireless Week: The FCC today moved to make 100 MHz of 5 GHz spectrum more accessible for unlicensed Wi-Fi use. The new report and order focused on relaxing the rules governing the operation of Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) in the 5 GHz band, specifically removing current restriction on indoor-only use and increasing the permissible power in the 5.150-5.250 GHz band. According to the FCC, the new rules will allow U-NII devices to “better integrate with other unlicensed portions of the 5 GHz band to offer faster speeds and reduce congestion at crowded Wi-Fi hot spots.” In addition, the Commission reworked rules for all unlicensed Wi-Fi operations in the 5 GHz Band and updated certain technical rules, requiring manufacturers to secure their devices against illegal modification in order to avoid interference with on-going operations in 5 GHz.
The band they are opening up is FAR below where any of our stuff is, so I don't suspect it's going to impact us in terms of noise floor. In the near term, it may even provide extra space for part 15 backhaul links, depending on what the regs turn out to be. Regarding the manufacturer's rules, we are already using a "compliance testing" mode of the mikrotik routers, that allows them to transmit anywhere they're actually capable of. Assuming that mode remains in the routers, what the standard bands for part 15 wifi are should not impact us. Nigel K7NVH
