I am K7TUM and I am a member of the Capitol Peak Repeater Gp. (NOT Capitol Park) Jeremy, on the board, and chief tech, asked me to cfg the VHF APRS digi/iGate that is to be installed on the peak. We are nearing completion of the equipment setup. It is operating from my QTH with the coord.s of the peak. *Question:* We are delighted to use the HAMWAN Internet access already, for such things a s remote management, Echolink, and IP phone for Auto patch. However, Jeremy is not a network/IP tech, so he needs some help. He has never known how to ask for a static IP address, or a DHCP reservation for any of the equipment up there. BUT I CAN. We would like to put up this APRS iGate, but we need to be able to telnet to it AND view the web interface for management. How would we go about securing a stable address for that device? Can you give me one, or do you prefer I give you the MAC address, or maybe there is NAT at play and we need to "play" with it s'more. What do you prefer? Thanks y'all. -- ****************************************** Mark Weisenfeld K7TUM CN87na <http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php?Grid=CN87na> (SW corner) **************************
Requests for network configuration on sites should be sent to netops@hamwan.org. Please send: - Location where you want to install equipment - A description of the equipment - Contact information - MAC address There is usually DHCP services in place at HamWAN sites but not always. We can either configure a DHCP reservation based on the MAC (effectively a static address even though your device still uses DHCP) or assign you a classic static IP address.that you will need to program into your device.. -Doug-, KD7DK HamWAN Netop On Fri, Apr 12, 2019 at 9:29 PM Mark Weisenfeld <mark@weisenfelds.com> wrote:

HI Mark Keep me posted as your progress. I'm still struggling on the Internet connection on my main computer so greatly appreciate all that seem to have been born with a silver mouse (computer) in their mouth. I joined the HamWAN email reflector when I first learned of the project so I could stand in wonder at the technological capabilities of "Seattle hams". Through the Redmond cycling club HamWAN was used to transfer data for the Ride around Mt Rainier last year. Truly amazing application of radio and computer technology. And I stand in wonder. Kenny Skyped in a presentation to OARS a few years back. Mark, In general it is not hard at all to ask for (and get) an address, two, or more setup. For the most part it’s just asking the question. If you have other items already up there, it is likely you already have a pool of addresses assigned to the site and just need to use one. If you are attaching to a cell site from a distance as a client, then it is a matter of setting up an address pool that is routed over your client connection. I did some looking at the existing Capital Peak addressing and did not see anything in the hosts file for the IP phone and Echolink, so if you can shoot me the existing address for those two I can pin down what address space they are in and see how much more is still available. I take it the iGate will be plugged in the same switch / location as the other gear? As far as firewalls/etc go, I tend to differ from some of the others on the list only in how I approach it. Unless there’s a compelling reason to leave a device on public IP space, I tend to prefer to put it behind a dedicated firewall whenever possible and do classic port forwarding. It is also 100% possible to leave it in the public address space and firewall it off there as well. The only difference is that public firewall rules are easier to fat-finger and mess up than your typical Netgear/Linksys firewall which guides your firewall capabilities through a simpler user interface (web page). In the end it is entirely up to you and either will do what you want with respect to allowing telnet and web access to the device. I have an iGate with identical functionality in Everett as do others. You can also restrict >where< telnet and web can be used from instead of just leaving it wide open for the entire world to keep hacking at. Let us know what you can and we’ll help get to the bottom of it.
