Second dish/radio with same credentials
As spring comes upon us young men start thinking about...portable HamWan ops. I have a second new dish and radio I've never set up. Can I use the same credentials I have on my residential dish? If I have success with my full size Micro-Tik as a portable I may be tempted to trade someone for a more portable size. Ric Mount Vernon WA
Hi Ric, A couple of us hams here in North Bend ARES have a dish we used for portable HamWan ops (before our local Rattlesnake sector node was forced out by DNR). We have our portable dishes configured exactly same as our fixed dishes. However, be aware that since we only use HamWan for emcomm we do not typically have our dishes turned on except in emergencies, occasional Winlink tests, SET exercises, etc. And when we do that it is only the fixed location dish or the portable, so I haven’t actually tested them both on and connected to the same sector node. Offhand, I can’t see why that wouldn’t work, as the IP addresses are assigned via DHCP and I would think that the HamWan system would be agnostic about everything else. But the question is begged: what use case do you have that would require two dishes simultaneously connected from the same owner? BTW, since our HamWan sector is now gone, we are discussing P2P connections with our MikroTick dishes among our team, since there are now 4 of us with dishes, which is facilitated by choice of fixed vs portable. It's pretty common to have a loaner dish to demonstrate HamWAN to those that have no direct experience with it. It's quite the showstopper at events such as field day and other public events. On Wed, Apr 6, 2022 at 2:22 PM Stephen Kangas <stephen@kangas.com> wrote:

HamWAN doesn’t require any creds/registrations. You can have two or more devices easily. Each device has a unique hardware address, so you can connect to the same sector without concerns. Follow the config instructions on the web site and you’ll be set. http://hamwan.org/Standards/Network%20Engineering/Client%20Node%20Configurat... <http://hamwan.org/Standards/Network%20Engineering/Client%20Node%20Configuration.html> As network operators we’d prefer if you give them different names so we can more easily tell them apart if you ask for help, but otherwise they’ll work fine. We give the example name format in step 19 of the instructions as "CALLSIGN/YourLocation-DestinationCell”. The callsign part is important as it’s what qualifies as ID’ing, the latter part of YourLocation-DestinationCell is mostly informative info when the admins are looking at what’s connected. You can change this latter part to reflect a mobile station or other use case. Nigel

MikroTik is the only equipment that works with PNW HamWan, as a proprietary MikroTik mode is used. Here is a list of know compatible models: http://hamwan.org/Standards/Component%20Engineering/Client%20Hardware.html The hams in my area have the LHG-5, and one guy has also successfully used the SXTsq Lite5 within a few miles of the sector node. We ordered ours from a EU dealer, they dropped-shipped directly from the MikroTik factory to us arriving within 10days. Make sure you spec the non-US model, and if they have it get the US plug version of the AC power adapter. If you are ever in the Bothell or Lynnwood area, I can meet you and you're welcome to borrow my dish for a couple weeks if you want to try it out. I have a MikroTik XL HP5 that I ordered from Streakwave after sending in my FCC paperwork. I've used the dish to connect to Haystack Mountain at a 25 mile distance. It's powered over Ethernet and should work out of the box. Let me know privately if you'd like to do this and I can reconfigure it for your callsign and HamWAN node frequency. Speaking of LHG-5s, I have a spare one sitting here I'm not using if you (or anyone) would like to buy it. Fully configured and working with the Capitol Hill node right now. $40 OBO, pick up on Lake Union. 73 -de- n8qg On Thu, Apr 7, 2022 at 10:35 AM Jesse Victors via PSDR <psdr@hamwan.org> wrote:

Sorry guys,
Thought I’d offer some insight to the status of the site from a different perspective, my mistake.
Thought I might offer a screen shot to show that shit was down between 0130 and 1330ish but has since been restored.
So you know, OMG HAMWAN is down. 10:24 NOW PLAYING WATCH LATER ADD TO QUEUE (youtube.com) <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8_Kfjo3VjU>
I’ll STFU in the future.

Jamie,
I don't mean to conflict with Jamie's graph, since it appears he has access to the site owners monitoring for the building, but I just got another update from our
host that other machines in the rack where the HamWAN equipment is located are still offline.
Thanks
Kenny

Yeah, my HamWAN is still down. Status of K7DK repeater is not known to me, I am now out of the area. I asked K7DK to please check it.

I have received confirmation from our host that power is certainly out at Buck and the site owner will be sending someone to investigate the issue.
Thanks

That seems logical. I have reached out to our hosts and asked if any of their equipment is also impacted. We haven't been able to-do a site visit/maintenance checkup in two years due to COVID, so hopefully it is just a site power issue.
