Hi Folks - New member of the list here. Saw the presentation yesterday at the Mesh-A-Palooza event, and ordered a dish and Mikrotik receiver a few minutes ago. Unfortunately I live in a hole just down the hill from Microsoft, so no telling if I will actually be able to connect. The next new site may or may not work, thanks to trees and terrain. Or maybe someone will get a good deal on almost-new gear :) Mike WA9QHP
Welcome to the list Mike, I recommend hopping on the #hamwan IRC channel, and you're about guaranteed one of us will be around and could run a plot to see if your place is likely to be covered. That's also where most of the day to day discussion happens, so it tends to be pretty active. Nigel K7NVH
I recommend hopping on the #hamwan IRC channel,
It was nice to see the IRC access listed as a web service during Bart's talk at NW-MESH in Auburn. http://webchat.freenode.net There's probably even a way to automatically load #HamWAN. Bill, WA7NWP

Thanks Ryan... (With a personalized nick name of course...) It looks like http://www.qwebirc.org/ is the software used. Gotta try that at home.. Bill

I am Bob KE7JL and I am also a new guy on the block, having seen the light in Auburn on Saturday. I purchased a demo 5SHPN and antenna that Bart had with him. Network land is at the very edge of my experience/knowledge so I will need help. I learn best by trial and error and over the last few days Ive done a lot of trials and made a lot of errors, however I have progressed to a point where I have to ask for help. Current status: · I have the 5SHPN and antenna on a tripod · I have the 5SHPN connected to my computer and power · I have Winbox on the computer · I am able to connect to the modem using Winbox · The software was v5.23 · Following Network Engineering -> Client Node Configuration document: o I downloaded RouterOS v6.7 from the internet and uploaded it to the modem o The reboot was successful o Per Step 2, I was able to give the modem an identity o Per Step 3, I was able to assign an admin password o Per Step 4, I was able to add the shared administrators. o Per Step 5.1 &2, I was able to get the keys to the Files folder in the modem o Steps 5.3 to 23 is where I hit the wall and need help. These steps appear to define the task [in the small box] followed [in the box below] with what appears to be lines of code or command line instructions. I do not know how to complete the tasks. § Examples: 5.3 [Import SSH keys and associate them with the right accounts]. How or where do I to that. 8. [Remote Logging]. Something. I have drilled down to some related windows in Winbox but they do not have a place to add code. Anyhow that is where I am now and would appreciate any help I can get. Also, where to I get a Passcode to register with HamWAM? Thank you, Bob KE7JL in Kirkland
Hello Bob, Those are indeed commands to be run in the command line. You can access that via Winbox by clicking on the "New Terminal" button on the left side menu. As for a passcode, for now, one isn't necessary. If you complete the steps on the wiki, and are able to receive a signal from a cell site, that should be all you need. I also recommend hopping into the IRC channel (You can join via the web interface here: http://webchat.freenode.net/?nick=HamWAN..&channels=%23HamWAN) and normally a number of us are around and available to assist you in realtime. Hello Bob, It's looking like you managed to connect! I see your modem associated with the site at Capitol Park! Congratulations! Nigel
Once I understood that that I needed to use the terminal it was easy, just a matter of copy and paste. I did keep notes that I will be happy to share. My next goal is to be able to be able to get my RMS Gateway connected to the WL2K CMSs. As I am currently configured I cannot seem to get out to the internet. Any ideas? Hi Bob, Your device is online and able to reach all the way out to the internet though the HamWAN network. However, the Ethernet port side of your device doesn't have an IP address assigned to it, so it won't be able to route any traffic yet. Hello Bob,
It's looking like you managed to connect! I see your modem associated with the site at Capitol Park! Congratulations!

Hi Bob, Glad to hear everything worked out! I assume this means you won't be returning the modem + dish? Your modem's microwave IP address is actually 44.24.240.27 (seen with /ip address print). The 44.24.244.1 and 44.24.245.1 IPs you configured are HamWAN DNS service IPs. Your modem (or other devices) uses them to resolve names (like google.com) to IP addresses (like 173.194.33.72). --Bart On 2/28/2014 11:19 AM, Bob wrote:
Thanks Cory, I am going to poke around a bit more. Is the IP address fixed or is it assigned by 44.24.244.1 or 44.24.245.1?
I will be busy off and on through tomorrow evening. I will get on ICR when I have the time to dedicate to it.
