1/2" Outdoor UV Protected CAT 5e
All, I'm not sure what the current cable type and product is running from tower mounted antennas to the equipment in the site shelters, but check this product out. I came across this Outdoor rated CAT5e cable designed to mount alongside coax on a tower. It grounds like ½" coax. This is exciting things that jumped out to me: 1. Mounts to towers using common coax rubber doughnut ½" mounts 2. Can be grounded just like coax to meet the requirements of the site owner 3. Is Outdoor rated 4. Is UV rated If interested, please see Tyler Booth, contact card attached. Thanks, Jamie Hughes WA7JH Mobile: (360) 340-8886<tel:+13603408886>
Jamie, Typically we use Ubiquiti TC-Pro cable for our installs and there are cable cushions available that work with it. This is certainly a neat product as well. Nigel

Ooof, that pricing is real rough. Unless there’s a real specific circumstance, it’s pretty hard to justify a 50x+ cost increase for some ethernet cable. Nigel

Nigel, The TC-Pro looks like it’s outdoor rated, but not so much tower use. In some cases that I may go, I will be collocated with public safety equipment and I know that the cable they will require must be tower rated cable. I like this stuff, even at it’s price, since it can be grounded just like coax at the required points of contact using standard grounding kits provided by Times or Belden. I get it’s pricy, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Jamie, Please do use as you see fit. There are certainly applications where it may make sense. For HamWAN as an org doing installs with the community’s generously donated funds, finding the appropriate value/performance balance is critical. We’ve been using TC-Pro nearly since inception (and have also gone back and replaced some older stuff that wasn’t, with TC-Pro). Installed appropriately I’m not aware of any cable failures. Installing appropriately also got significantly easier when we found proper cushions for the cable. With regards to grounding, typically we use grounding devices attached to a bus bar at building entrance, but if there were a requirement to do it on/at tower, my first thought would be to use a weatherproof steel enclosure, put a grounding bar and the grounding devices in there, and ground that way. Additionally, that allows you to put protection on the data lines as well, much like you’d do on coax with a polyphaser. I suspect that would remain substantially cheaper, but I haven’t run the numbers at the moment. Alternately, run fiber to the tower and put a switch in an enclosure, so no conductive path leaves the tower at all. (This assumes power is available/can be run.) Anyway, as I said, there’s nothing wrong with this choice if that’s what makes sense or works for you. For HamWAN installs we’ve had so far, that cable would double or more the cost of the entire cell site (Cell buildouts are typically a few $k, and we often use 1/2 to 1 1k’ box of TC-Pro), for benefits that are addressed in other ways, so I don’t imagine us using it or something like it except in very very exceptional circumstances. Cool! Couple things, turn the load bar till it breaks the slot for the driver and try not to use a female connector on the cable, a male is much harder to damage. A NF-NF bullet can be used and then if the tower monkey breaks it, you can replace the bullet vs. having to replace the connector at height. I used a 7/8" one of these and some braided tinned copper as "fill" to ground 10 runs of shielded cat5 at one of our sites. Wrap the braid around the first cable, then add the second, wrap it around again, and so on. This makes it thick enough to attach to and gives great conductivity to ground. Ensure you put butyl wrap around each individual cable end to seal it up too. We do this at the top of the tower and then at the entrance. We've yet to lose a radio to lightning, even after numerous direct strikes on the site. 73's -- Bryan Fields 727-409-1194 - Voice http://bryanfields.net
Is there a cat5e cable that includes a thick enough grounding conductor to handle faults? I've had to run thick ground wire next to it because lightning keeps jumping up between grounding points running up the side of hills and burning out the thin shields and I was thinking a thick coaxial-shield/armored direct burial cat5e cable (although expensive) would make thing easier vs running cable and grounds separately in conduit. Just a thought, Robert (kd2iua) On 9/2/2019 12:26 AM, Jamie Hughes wrote:

Ooof, that pricing is real rough. Unless there’s a real specific circumstance, it’s pretty hard to justify a 50x+ cost increase for some ethernet cable.

Jamie,
You happen to know the cost per foot on that.

I’m not sure what the current cable type and product is running from tower mounted antennas to the equipment in the site shelters, but check this product out. I came across this Outdoor rated CAT5e cable designed to mount alongside coax on a tower. It grounds like ½” coax. This is exciting things that jumped out to me:
1. Mounts to towers using common coax rubber doughnut ½” mounts 2. Can be grounded just like coax to meet the requirements of the site owner 3. Is Outdoor rated 4. Is UV rated

I believe this was a nice way of telling you to "fuck off". :D 7.50/ft is insane, and it's not even got a water block in it. I've used a belden product which was gel filled and armored/shielded for under a dollar per foot. Even 1 5/8" coax is 7/foot new, and it's got 4 oz of copper per foot in it. 73's -- Bryan Fields 727-409-1194 - Voice http://bryanfields.net
I don’t think HamWAN or even the typical WISP is the target audience for this product. I could easily see this product used on 1000 foot broadcast towers in the Midwest that are hit by multiple lightning strikes per Month. On Mon, Sep 2, 2019 at 13:01 Bryan Fields <Bryan@bryanfields.net> wrote:

If the need for larger and more sophisticated grounding architectures were required. I 'd be inclined to just install 1/2" armored flex conduits at about 1.40/ft and blow multiple runs of TC into it. You'd still come in at under 2.00/foot and reduce the amount of cushions needed.Sent on the go, from somewhere other than here. -------- Original message --------From: Bryan Fields <Bryan@bryanfields.net> Date: 2019-09-02 13:00 (GMT-08:00) To: psdr@hamwan.org Subject: Re: [HamWAN PSDR] 1/2" Outdoor UV Protected CAT 5e On 9/1/19 11:18 PM, Jamie Hughes wrote:> Please see attached data sheet. I wasn't really clear with my question before but basically, would it be cheaper to just get metallic conduit for electrical (liquid tight) at the hardware store and run your own multiple pairs of shielded cat5e inside of it? It seems rather expensive for just one premade cable but would pulling multiple ethernet runs together in the same conduit lead to crosstalk or other issues? I think it would at least make tower installs more durable and neater than just securing the cable on the legs bare (bird damage?). Also liquid tight already has standard grounding connectors you can get anywhere. Robert (kd2iua) On 9/1/2019 11:18 PM, Jamie Hughes wrote:
