HamWAN Board Director Elections

Hello Everyone, It is once again time for our annual elections for the HamWAN Board of Directors. Here’s a quick recap of the main points for those that need a refresher. Board member positions last for one year. Any Supporting Member is eligible to vote for board members. Any Supporting Member is eligigle to run for a position on the board. There is no limit on the number of board members. If you feel you would be valuable, you’re not taking a seat away from someone else. There is a minimum of 3 board members required by the constitution. Each board member is a separate election. IE you don’t have to choose only one person to vote for, you choose Yea or Nay for all individuals. Please respond to the list here with your votes. This serves as our public record. We do not have a concept of nominations. The individual themselves must express intent to run for a board position. In the above, we make use of the term Supporting Member, this is a specifically defined criteria in the constitution, which are individuals who have contributed at the Basic Level ($20/mo or more) for at least the last 6 months. Both the time and financial criteria must be met to count. There have been a couple instances of employer matching or other donations this year that we weren’t able to attribute a source to, so if you feel that you’ve been missed in this list, I apologize. Please reach out and we’ll get it sorted. Likewise so far in 2021 we’ve faced some challenges at some of our sites, but thanks to a bunch of work by folks both inside and outside the HamWAN org directly, we’re happy to be moving forward, with some potential growth into new sites we could look forward to. As is my usual procedure, I try to ask the existing board members if they’d like to continue to serve if elected, and lump us together to minimize email threads. Unfortunately due to timing I wasn’t able to confirm everyone ahead of time. I was able to confirm Cory, and will include him in my thread. I would very much encourage Tom, Bart, Rob, and Doug to continue, and want to thank all of my fellow board members for their efforts in support of HamWAN over the last year. For anyone else who wishes to run for the board, please send an email here to the mailing list announcing your intention to run. The voting period on your election will end 7 days after your announcement. Duties are not time intensive, and mostly consist of being available for occasional votes to approve expenses or discuss larger organizational decisions. It is encouraged to write a small blurb about yourself and what you would like HamWAN to do, and what you bring to the table, so that folks who aren’t immediately familiar with your name can have an idea on who they’re voting for. Greetings all, As Nigel has noted, it is that time again for elections, and I will put my name forward once again for your consideration. 2019 and 2020 have definitely been challenges in different ways for different people. 2021 is continuing that trend in yet different ways still. There are several expansion issues I am currently working in the EMCOMM side of the world including Pacific County, Spokane County and Region 9 surrounding counties, and some additional up here in Snohomish County. Pretty much all of my time this year through September will be take up with those efforts, as the funding has to be spent and projects completed by then. There are a number of areas within HamWAN the organization I would like to see us improve such as strategic planning, recruiting, training, reporting, and some of the business aspects of the organization. Few of these are new topics, but without some additional push and changes it is hard to include, train, and support new blood needed to keep the organization moving. Our website has been mostly stagnant for years, with little improvement or change in published items such as an accurate map, current equipment recommendations and sources, and finished configuration specs of standard resources beyond the client config script. This is not intended as a criticism of current or past individual efforts as everyone puts in the effort they have the time to give in the areas that interest them. It IS a call that we need to improve the SYSTEM and / or tools by which some of these items are maintained. We simply cannot move forward if we can't even maintain what we have. Vote AND Participate. It's not just Board members who are needed. We have a continuing need for climbers, ground crew, NetOps, mentors, advocates, programmers, and all sorts of help. If you see something you thing needs to be improved, let us know. If you see something you can do to help us improve, let us know. The voting period for myself will conclude 7 days from now. Getting connected to HamWAN

Hey everyone! HamWAN has been on my radar for a couple months and I wanted to get connected. I have a couple options. 1) if 5 GHz can pass through double-paned glass, then I could point an antenna through the window from my work office in downtown Seattle, connecting with the hubs nearby or across the water. 2) if 5 GHz can pass through tree leaves, I could mount the dish on the mast holding the center of my HF fan dipole, as shown here: https://www.qrz.com/db/kj7yls At a height of 30 feet it might be able to connect with Paine. 3) if 5 GHz can pass through a thin piece of plywood and tree leaves, I could mount the antenna in my attic. That should be tall enough to jump over my neighbors house I think. Which of these would work? I'm leaning towards the first option. The second would work but it would just be more logistically difficult. I believe the third option would suffer significant signal degradation, yes? As far as antennas go, the LHG 5 seems to have pretty good performance, is within my hobby budget, and should work for the links that I have in mind, yes? It should also be lighter and more wind-resistant since its hollow. I should be able to mount that on a pole, connect PoE, and then work on the routing, correct? If this is a decent choice, where is a good place to order the International edition? Thanks for any advice with this! Jesse KJ7YLS

Hello Everyone, As per my usual procedure, I have reached out to my fellow board members to confirm who would like to serve again if elected and combined our emails to reduce email mess, and I have heard from Cory in the affirmative. I encourage my other fellow board members to run as well, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with you over the next year. Cory Johnson has acted as our Treasurer/Secretary for a number of years, and whose efforts have truly been invaluable. Cory handles the finances, makes sure the taxes get filed, and the bills get paid. Thank you Cory for your continued help! Nigel Vander Houwen (me) has been a board member for several years, managing contracts, and serves as the chairman (tie breaking vote we’ve thankfully never needed). He also typically manages these sorts of public communications and processes (like these elections). He has also been part of the network operations team for many years helping to architect, build, and operate the network here in Puget Sound. Apparently the subject established by Nigel concerning the rumored implosion at Freenode does not meet the "freenode community standards" whatever those are. The #hamwan channel is now ##hamwan. Thanks, Andre, K6AH URGENT - Recovering lost 5GHz in court Our attorney thinks we have a chance of taking the FCC to court over their taking of the upper parts of our 5 GHz band. For us to do that, we need to prove “standing”. According to Wikipedia, “…Standing is the ability of a party to demonstrate to the court sufficient connection to and harm from the law or action challenged to support that party's participation in the case.” If we can establish standing, then he feels we have a good shot at retaining some of the bandwidth we have recently lost. If you have 5 GHz nodes on an AREDN network, please review the following checklist which will help determine your standing in this case. Then, send me an email at k6ah(a)are----sh.org . You do not actually need to complete the checklist, just be ready to answer the questions. Time is of the essence here, so your help is needed right away. Checklist for declaration of AREDN operator in support of standing What is your name, address, FCC license call sign (and class), and connection to AREDN? What frequency does your ham radio transmit over? Please specify each individual frequency and channel number, must be within Lower 45 or Upper 30.Lower 45 – 5.850-5.895 GHz, Upper 30 – 5.895-5.925 GHz Is this the common frequency your mesh network uses? Your transmitter: what is the location (latitude/longitude or street address), type of transmitter, type(s) of transmission? Are you at a commercial site (antenna farm, etc.)? Why are you at this site? (e.g., to get line of sight). Have you had any issues at a site with a Part 15 operator or other operator objecting to your amateur transmission, or wanting to impose conditions? Please describe. What network are you tied into? (AREDN mesh – describe transmitter configuration and network tied into). What is the length of your radio link? (1 mile, 10 miles, 20 miles, etc.). For multipoint nodes, estimate the longest links. What public safety or other agencies are supported by your operation? Please describe a recent event where you supported an agency (e.g., forest fire, tornado, or a preparedness drill – need date and place) and how so (e.g., relayed video of the fire to fire fighting agency): How will your ham radio operation be adversely affected by the FCC’s new rules? Lower 45 – e.g., interference from unlicensed operation, difficulty getting or keeping site because of Part 15 operators; Upper 30 – e.g., interference from C-V2X sidelink transmitted from a cell site, being ordered to cease and desist from transmitting because would interfere with C-V2X. If you transmit in the Upper 30, what is the distance from your site to the nearest cell tower? What will happen to your radio operation if new FCC rules become effective? Possible examples include: have to move to new site, move to new frequency, increase the power of your transmitter, modify equipment, modify transmission, provide less service, spend more money, cease service. Please explain why. This is the actual harm to individual ham operators that we need to demonstrate in order for AREDN to have standing. What was your previous (or current) experience with operation in other bands (900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 3.4 GHz) with Part 15 operations or operators: Noise floor, interference problems (describe); Problems getting, or staying at a site (identify the specific site, describe the problem). Please describe any problems with cellular telephone operators.
